Spectacle

October 24, 2008

Here is fifteen pictures I took on the theme of spectacle.

Rather than taking pictures which represent Spectacle overtly I thought I would try to capture scenes which would not initially come to mind when thinking of the theme.

I looked into day and night cycles, the difference in cloud formations and their effects on their surroundings and also general patterns which we follow in life, (the smoking of a cigarette, traffic lights, etc).

By using Photoshop I attempted to isolate the aspect of the scene I was attempting to capture, thus amplifying the subject and it’s effects.

In conclusion my take on the theme of Spectacle was to investigate the ‘little’ things which we usually don’t notice in our  everyday lives, and how their minute changes were examples of Spectacle themselves.

Reflection on The Five Obstructions

October 7, 2008

I was inspired after watching the five Obstructions. While I am not a fan of Lars Von Trier or the Dogma 95 documentaries I have watched, I understood his philosophy of creating a documentary without the glitz and glamour of the arguable Hollywood spectacles that many have become.

The Five Obstructions however is something different. It shows Trier’s rebellious personality, outwardly showing a destructive nature while inwardly perhaps, investigating the cogs which make the ‘Perfect Human Creator’ Jørgen Leth tick.

The film showed me how obstructions may not hamper a production, but instead allow a director creative blessings by which he may improve upon his initial vision.

While the obstructions may be out of a Director’s control it showed how one may be able to work with them, rather than around them, perhaps hindering a production.
